S03E06 - Container Designs

Shipping containers are used largely to transport goods all over the world. It is estimated that 90% of the world's trade stock is transported using shipping containers. Approximately 100 million container loads travel over the world's oceans in over 5,000 container ships.

The high volume of shipping containers are creating problems, after being used a few times the containers become redundant and nobody wants them anymore. These used containers have no real use and it becomes more cost effective to manufacture new containers on the opposite side of the ocean with new stock than it is to transport empty used containers back to the port of origin. Each and every year the shipping container industry continues to produce more containers posing a serious waste disposal problem. Rather than having containers stacked dozens high in port cities, architects and designers are recognizing the potential shipping containers have as a source of abundant building material.

As a designer I find the greatest satisfaction working with unique clients and materials. It allows me to develop not only my skills as a designer, using a material that is built to factory specifications but offers a number of unique opportunities for the client.

S03E05 - Client Vision

Hey Guys,

I Just want to share with you a new design I completed this week at Jazz Designs. This split level design sits on a steep slope just north of Brisbane. The floor plan and overall 2D design had been completed and approved by the clients and the next step was to create a 3D model and create some 3D perspectives for the client.

The clients supplied a few images they really liked and wanted to incorporate the same look into their own design. This is becoming very common for clients to supply examples of images, designs, photos and or materials to better articulate their vision.

As a designer I find this to be a extremely useful tool to better understand what the client is wanting to achieve. However clients need to articulate what it is about the image or material that they like or want and designers need to be intuitive to the overall design and what it is the client is trying to achieve.

I look forward to hearing the client's feedback and hope that I have incorporated all the elements the clients wanted into their own design.

S03E04 - Client Concept

Hey Guys,

I Just want to share with you a new design recently completed at Jazz Designs this week. The initial floor plan and configuration was completed by the Jazz Design team and approved by the clients, I then took the approved Floor plan and modelled up a 3D facade to complete the Concept.

S03E03 - Probation

Hey Guys

It's been over 2 months working at Jazz Designs now and I like to think I am settling into my new role, however it has not all been so smooth. The transition from Archicad to Revit has been more challenging than I thought. I am improving each and everyday and will continue to improve to ensure my designs are not limited by my Revit ability

Over the past 2 month I have had the opportunity to work on a variety of different projects including some Multi-residential units. I have been preparing them for development approval which I hope to share with you once they are approved. In the meantime here are a few images from some of my most recent projects located near the Sunshine Coast

S03E02 - Test

It's been a very interesting week for me this week, I have been lucky enough to be presented with an opportunity to work closer to home for a building design firm North of Brisbane.

I am extremely excited and nervous about the new role and the challenges that may be ahead. For the past three years I have been working for Focus Architecture Documenting a variety of projects from residential projects and for the last six months I have been lucky enough to work on some Multi Residential projects as well.

I wanted to test myself to prove that i was capable of meeting not only the expectations of Jazz designs but the expectations I put on myself. After my Interview I asked if they had any current projects I could work on and test myself.

Floor Plan

This was the project I was given and I have been working on it for the last few days, It's a new house North of Brisbane up the Sunshine Coast on quite a steep site that incorporates a split level within the design. I was given the Floor plan and a few days to create some 3D perspectives.

I was pleased with the finished product and thought it met the client's brief as well as my own expectations.

Again I apologise for the lack of posts of late, I have just returned from my USA trip, I will be going through my Notes and Photos and aim to blog about all the amazing places I visited. I will breakdown my blogs into the cities I travelled to from Los Angeles to Orlando. I will be covering various architectural typologies, monuments, Stadiums, Homes and Skyscrapers.

Until then I thought I would share with you a renovation we done in North Brisbane. This was a project I documented a few years ago while working at Focus Architecture, Its a traditional Queenslander 4 bedroom home with a contemporary rear extension.

S02E09 - Sample Size

Hey guys

I decided to upload a selection of work I completed for my last semester of my Architectural Degree. The Course was aimed at introducing students to computer aided design concepts including modelling, rendering and compositing theory.

The objective of the course was to introduce fundamental concepts in 2D, 3D and 3D modelling. This aim was to enable student to utilise computers and create drawings including plans, sections, perspectives and axonometric representations using various Software packages that includes, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Sketchup and 3DS Max

Exercise - Floor Plan
This presentation style floor plans using Photoshop and shade over existing line drawn floor plan with textures, shadows, line weights.

Exercise - Section
This section was enhanced using Photoshop adding entourage and textures over the existing section drawing.

Exercise - Exterior Render
Importing the Sketchup Model I created into 3DS max. Then adding a daylight system and exporting the render into Photoshop to adjust the image with Entourage, textures to create a completed exterior scene

S02E08 - Epilogue

Last week was the deadline for anyone who wanted to enter the Tiny Homes competition, although not realising the deadline and not having a polished presentation panel, I uploaded my design anyway and was fortunate enough to have my design included with the other submissions.

Competition Entry

After submitting my design, I spent the week refining my presentation panel. I needed to complete my elevations and Sections. I added more detail and textures to help improve the overall legibility. I also altered the 3D Perspective to help enforce my idea of the SIPP home being a safe and secure place. This changes were only small but improve the presentations overall legibility.

Presentation Panel

Submitting this assignment completes all the requirements for my Architectural Degree. I can't imagine anything more satisfying than setting a goal and finally reaching it. For me it has always been Architecture, however it has not been without it's dramas. With all the late nights, countless models and hundreds of kilometres, Finally I have done it.

My Life 2013-2016

I couldn't of done any of this without the support of my Fiancée, her support has been nothing but constant. Even though I still have more study ahead of me, for the next two years I will be focusing all my time and effort with my beautiful Fiancée. I look forward to our Trip across America this year before coming home to plan our Wedding.

S02E07 - S.I.P.P Homes

Hey guys welcome back, work has been full on this week but I managed to work on a few different things for the tiny homes competition. Firstly I was playing around with some design names and how I want it to display - still working on it however. I was able to add some text for my concept statement which will be added to my competition panel.

I was able to create a exploded 3D view of my module and identify key design elements and information to ensure that the module designs are as informative as possible. Finally I spent a little time updating my Site plan, all of these things are still work in progress and will no doubt change in the coming weeks,

Concept Statement

From the earliest times human beings have built shelters of many different kinds, depending on climate, available materials, the need to protect ourselves from the weather and the environment. Houses offer shelter and protection from the elements.

A house comes to represent a home, a place of security that takes us into an enclosed space and into which we can safely retreat from the external world, a place we can make our own.

At a symbolic level, buildings are a projection of the human psyche into the outer environment. A house is a place of safety and security which can be associated to a single universal symbol, a symbol which is recognised throughout the world.

The S.I.P.P home is a secure, independent, permanent and private home that is not only low cost solution for the unsheltered homeless but they also provide for young adults living without stable housing. The S.I.P.P homes provide a safe environment and a safe place to store their valuable items while providing privacy within a shared community.

The design of the S.I.P.P home is a secure and safe space using the familiar house symbol which reinforces the notion of security and protection and amplifies the concept of stability for all the residents of the planned development.  The S.I.P.P homes are constructed using a combination of engineered beams and a continuous skin of timber cladding that form the solid wooden exteriors

S02E06 - Preliminary Issue not for Construction

The deadline for the Tiny homes competition is fast approaching. Last week I spent most of my time getting inspirations and ideas from all over the internet, including a Pinterest board my lecturer created which is dedicated to presentation panels. The pinterest board showcases some amazing skills and presentations from all over the world.

This week was the first time I brought all my drawings together, including my module floor plan, elevations and sections. I also exported my module into Lumion and created my first set of renders for my design.

Next week I will work on my Concept statement, Site Plan & material list. I will also be improving my existing drawings before adding them to layout.
